On a recent day trip to Tomar, we enjoyed lunch at Casa das Ratas. Yes, the house of rats. My mother in law saw the sign as we were wandering about the town. It called her attention for obvious reasons. A busy Sunday in Tomar meant that we had to wait a bit for our reservation before being seated in this contemporary restaurant with traditional cuisine.

We all ordered one of the daily specialties. My partner loves “iscas” and so he enjoyed his liver sauteed in onions that were delicious. My mother in law and I both ordered the octopus. She refuses to order something she would prepare often in her own kitchen such as Arroz de Pato, rice with duck, which was one of the specials. We all know that hers is better, hands down.

The octopus was served with Migas de Bacalhau and potatoes. The migas were heavy on cabbage and garlic and were extraordinarily flavorful. It is such a simple dish prepared with pieces of salt cod, cabbage, garlic, and a bit of bread.

It was not the most aesthetic dish in any way, shape or form but the taste made up for it!
